ACTR Excellence in Teaching Award for Post-Secondary Instructors

Recipients of the 2026 ACTR Excellence in Teaching Russian Award for Post-Secondary Instructors: Irina Mikaelian and Polina Maksimovich 



Dr. Irina Mikaelian teaches at Penn State University. She is recognized for her outstanding contributions to Russian language pedagogy, including innovative, student-centered program design; mentorship that cultivates intercultural competence; and the creation of impactful international programs and cultural initiatives that enrich Russian studies on campus.





Dr. Polina Maksimovich teaches at the University of Denver. She is recognized for her leadership in building a sustainable Russian program; her relationship-rich, student-centered teaching; trauma-informed approaches to difficult topics; and her extensive work connecting classroom learning with broader community engagement.

Nominations for 2025-2026 are closed. Nominations for 2026-2027 will open in Fall 2026.

This award offers national recognition to a college or university instructor who demonstrates effective and innovative teaching practices and the ability to serve as an influential advocate for teaching Russian on a regional and/or national basis. With this award, we would like to honor an outstanding instructor of the Russian language and culture at the post-secondary college/university level.

Eligibility

  • The award is open to instructors of Russian language from any public or private post-secondary institution of any rank, whether part-time or/adjunct, full-time, contract or tenured, lecturer or full professor
  • The nominee must be a current member of ACTR
  • The nominee must have taught Russian language courses at least five (5) years
  • Candidates can be nominated by anyone, including a colleague, supervisor, or student(s)
  • Graduate students are not eligible for this award, but they can be nominated for the ACTR Excellence in Teaching Award for Graduate Student Instructors
  • ​Only one nomination will be accepted from each institution
