The World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages create a roadmap to guide learners to develop competence to communicate effectively and interact with cultural understanding.

Participants of this roundtable will discuss the importance and effectiveness of integrating the World-Readiness Standards for Russian 

in language curriculum at K-12 and college levels in order to facilitate learners’ progress toward performance indicators, bridge K-12 and college language curricula, and create consistency across Russian programs. The roundtable will also highlight the degree to which the National Standards positively impact student recruitment, program development, curriculum, and assessment practices. 
Roundtable participants:
  • Thomas Garza, University Distinguished Teaching Associate Professor and Director of the Texas Language Center,  University of Texas at Austin; service on the the task force on the Standards for Teaching Russian K-12 and on revising the Standards to include post-secondary learning
  • Jane Shuffelton, retired teacher of Russian and French, Brighton High School in Rochester, NY; service on the task force on the Standards for Teaching Russian K-12 and on revising the Standards to include post-secondary learning
  • Betsy Sandstrom, Russian language teacher, Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology, Alexandria, VA
  • Benjamin Rifkin, Professor of Russian, Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York
